QESBA media interventions

QESBA made the decision last week to respond to a number of media enquiries following a sensationalist story on the cover of the Journal de Montréal and the Journal de Québec about an English-sector Principals’ education mission to the Dominican Republic last year. Most of the media enquiries came from English media outlets and followed statements from Minister Beauchamp accusing English school boards of “des dépenses déplacés”. She used the opportunity to justify Bill 100, ordering school boards to cut PD, travel and publicity expenses by 25%, saying that, despite the objections of school boards, this incident proved to her that the right decision had been made with the law. QESBA has noted in a letter today its disappointment with AAESQ for its decision to desist from public comment on the matter.

Board of DIrectors meeting

A meeting of the Board of Directors was held last Friday, November 26, 2010 in Montreal. In response to the continuing uncertainty revolving around the future of elected school boards in Quebec, the Board approved the creation of a multi-faceted outreach initiative on “community engagement”. The Executive Committee has been charged with a mandate to recommend an inclusive plan to involve member boards and QESBA in reaching out to its wider communities, building alliances and promoting greater understanding of the link between school success and good board governance. The Executive will devote a major proportion of its upcoming meeting to addressing this priority. Complementary to those efforts, the Board agreed to expand the permanent mandate of the Public School Promotion Committee, henceforth to be known as the Communications Committee, to include communication and promotion planning and implementation on all key English school board matters.

CSBA Congress 2012

Among the other items decided at the Board meeting were the location of Quebec City for the 2012 Canadian School Boards Association Congress, and the list of committee Chairs for that congress. A full summary will be made available later this week for Board members to distribute to their Councils.

elan meeting

QESBA facilitated a meeting with two representatives of the English Language Arts Network today, seeking ideas on promoting arts education and the implication of Quebec Anglophone artists in our schools across Quebec. Long-time FACE School Principal, current Principal of Laurier Senior High School and arts education champion Nick Primiano kindly participated. QESBA also invited ELAN to make links with Artsmarts, which is doing ground-breaking work in a number of our schools.

The second phase of this campaign is in full development, with the preparation of a video to be launched in January. An accompanying pamphlet, website support and limited media placements will also accompany this promotion campaign, which will coincide with school board registration periods. acilitated
