Executive Committee Meeting

The QESBA Executive Committee has been mandated by the Board of Directors to take charge of the preparation and oversight of a major initiative on community engagement. The initiative, introduced by President Debbie Horrocks, will be the main subject of discussion at the Executive Committee meeting this Wednesday. The Executive, with representation from each of the nine Boards, is now well-placed to act as the hub for this kind of QESBA-member board action plan. A preliminary document produced by QESBA was circulated to the Executive Committee today. A firm plan of action will be deposited with the Board of Directors in January. It includes such elements as Town Halls, a designated PD session, communications materials and community outreach strategies.

ADGESBQ

The DGs’ monthly meeting, hosted by EMSB, featured updates and discussions on LEARN, SCAAA projects and priorities, special reports on ArtSmarts and the Quebec Institute for Lead Learners. The DGs were advised of the upcoming meeting between QESBA, the Board Chairs and the Minister in January, and invited to contribute ideas for the agenda. It was also reported that a long-awaited but positive meeting was held between the consultative tech voc committee and the Assistant Deputy Minister responsible for the file. The committee was told that further announcements on program authorizations should be expected in the coming weeks.

Wallace Lambert Tribute Symposium

A second planning meeting for this symposium, coordinated by the Association of Canadian Studies, was held last week. The symposium is expected to be held in March 2011 in Montreal. QESBA has been invited to help open the second day of the symposium, focusing directly on French immersion and its impact in Quebec and beyond. QESBA will also work with the other conference partners to supply other speakers and representatives to a student panel.

FCPQ Communiqué on School Surpluses

In anticipation of the recent updates on public finances delivered by the Finance Minister and Treasury Board President, the Fédération des commissions scolaires du Québec has produced a useful information document explaining the particular circumstances that have created a major increase in the level of school board surpluses. As the QESBA Board and member-board Chairs have discussed, the inclusion of education finances in the consolidated government statements (under the new GAAP rules) have reflected poorly on school boards by artificially inflating reported surpluses. Furthermore, our boards continue to be hampered by the rule limited surplus use to 10 per cent. Should you wish a copy of the document, please contact QESBA.

Go Publique

The video team preparing the signature video for Phase II of the Go publique campaign will be visiting a number of schools over the coming weeks. Every effort is being made to ensure that this promotional tool is inclusive of our network, across the province. Plans are now being laid for the launch of the video and related communications tools. The Chair of the Public School Promotions Committee along with the President will meet with Annakin Slade for the première of the Go Publique video on December 16.
