Spring Conference 2011
Congratulations to Chair Mike Chiasson, Director General Mike Dawson and the commissioners and staff of Western Quebec School Board for hosting, on behalf of AAESQ/QESBA, a wonderful Spring Conference. From all accounts, the conference was a huge success. Look for a Survey Monkey via e-mail this week so that we can gather all the feedback necessary from delegates.QESBA also would like to thank our partners in the annual Spring Conference: AAESQ President Stephan Pigeon and Executive Director Ron Silverstone and their entire team. Spring Conference will be on hiatus so that both AAESQ and QESBA can host their Canadian counterparts in 2012. Good luck to AAESQ with CAP! QESBA Student Forum
The QESBA Forum, “Student voices…near and far” was very well-received by all of those who attended the event. Moderator Jaime Orchard led students through current technology-based questions that gave the senior leadership of our network a frank look at technology and the benefits that students receive from more modern teaching methods. They offered a number of challenges to our school boards. QESBA and its Internet Task Force Follow-up Committee has made a commitment to exploring the creation of an ad hoc on-line student advisory body that can meet periodically to ensure that student voices can contribute to our future planning and decision-making. Brief meeting with the Minister
The QESBA Executive Committee and the nine board Chairs met with Education Minister Line Beauchamp briefly before she addressed delegates during the AAESQ/QESBA Spring Conference on Friday, May 27, 2011. It was a challenging and frank exchange, at which Mme Beauchamp made it clear – as she did in her subsequent speech to conference delegates – that there are changes under consideration. While the Minister recognized the unique and important work of our school boards, there was no clear commitment to addressing our persistent call to allow our school boards a greater marge de manoeuvre to implement programs and adapt budget allocations. There was no confirmation of an expected summit on governance in late summer. Board of Directors Meeting
A meeting of the QESBA Board of Directors was held on Thursday, May 26, 2011 in Gatineau, Quebec. Many dossiers were discussed and a full summary of the meeting will be distributed this week via e-mail. QESBA Nominations Committee
A first meeting of the QESBA Nominations Committee will be held on June 6, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. This is an election year for QESBA, therefore, the notices will start going out for nominations. The Committee will also examine the rules that will govern the senior elected positions (President and Vice-President) of the association. ADGESBQ
The May DGs’ meeting, which also took place in Gatineau, included discussions about planning and priorities, technical concerns and strategies regarding the budget compressions, reports from and DG appointments to a number of MELS and network committees. There were, as always, reports delivered from QESBA, CPNCA and SCAAAPN (the MELS Secteurs des services à la communauté anglophone, affaires autochtones et Plan Nord). Fall Annual General Meeting / Professional Development Session SAVE THE DATE
Please note that the QESBA AGM/PD will be held on the weekend of October 28 and 29, 2011. As you know, this is an election year for QESBA, therefore our Nominations Committee will be convened shortly to begin mapping out the electoral timetable. A site for the AGM has not yet been confirmed.
